🚨 White House gunfire leaves suspect dead. A man opened fire near a White House security checkpoint Saturday evening. Secret Service officers returned fire. The suspect later died at a hospital. The Secret Service said Best pulled a weapon from his bag shortly after 6 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. A bystander was also struck. 🇨🇳 China’s mine disaster kills 82. A gas explosion at a coal mine in northern China killed at least 82 people. The blast happened Friday evening at Liushenyu coal mine in Changzhi city. That is in Shanxi province, China’s coal heartland. Local officials called it the country’s deadliest mining accident in years. More than 120 people were hospitalized. Two people remained missing. Authorities first reported a higher death toll of 90. They later revised it down after calling earlier figures preliminary. Many injured miners were hurt by toxic gas. Rescue teams and medical workers rushed to the site. Officials said the mine operator committed serious legal violations. They did not explain the violations in detail. Chinese President Xi Jinping called for an all-out rescue effort. He also demanded a thorough investigation and legal accountability. The operator, Shanxi Tongzhou Coal & Coke Group, runs a mine with 1.2M tons of annual capacity. The mine was listed in 2024 as disaster-prone because of high gas content. One hospitalized miner said he smelled sulfur and told people to run. Energy security again came with a body count.

☣️ California leak empties neighborhoods. About 40K people were ordered to evacuate in Southern California. The emergency came from a leaking chemical tank at an aerospace plastics facility. The site is in Garden Grove, Orange County. The tank held 6K to 7K gallons of methyl methacrylate. That chemical is used to make plastic parts. Officials said the tank overheated Thursday. It began venting vapors into the air. Orange County Fire Authority Division Chief Craig Covey said the tank could crack or explode. Authorities expanded evacuation orders across Garden Grove and parts of Cypress, Stanton, Anaheim, Buena Park, and Westminster. Schools shut down. No deaths or injuries were reported. Fire officials later said they had stabilized the tank temperature. That bought time, not certainty. The facility belongs to GKN Aerospace. It makes parts for commercial and military aircraft. Garden Grove sits about 38 miles south of downtown Los Angeles. Disneyland’s two theme parks were not under evacuation orders. One sleeping resident said he grabbed only his wallet and passport. Industrial risk had entered the neighborhood without knocking.

🏛️ DOJ scrubs January 6th records. President Trump’s Justice Department removed January 6th case releases from its website, calling them partisan propaganda. The purge covers criminal cases tied to the 2021 Capitol riot, and documented charges, convictions, and sentencings. The department defended the move through its rapid-response account. It said there was nothing quiet about it, reversing weaponization under the Biden administration. Health officials say the true toll may be larger than detected. Congo has fought Ebola before. This version is rare, fast, and badly timed. Uganda has already seen cases linked to Congo travel. Earlier figures cited 246 cases and 80 deaths, with those statistics sure to rise. The latest reported toll has climbed above 118 deaths and 300 suspected cases. Uganda has reported one death and one suspected case. An American doctor in Congo is among newly confirmed patients. Cases have been confirmed in Bunia. They have also reached Goma, Mongbwalu, Butembo, and Nyakunde. Health experts say the virus spread undetected for weeks. Matthew Kavanagh of Georgetown said early tests looked for the wrong strain. That produced false negatives. Congo’s first confirmed case came on May 14th. Bundibugyo was confirmed the next day. The first known death occurred on April 24th in Bunia. It is part of a settlement resolving President Trump’s lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service. The lawsuit concerned the leak of Trump’s tax returns. The fund will compensate people who say they were politically targeted by federal prosecution. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche called it a lawful process for victims of lawfare. Democrat watchdogs called it corrupt and unconstitutional. Nearly 100 House Democrats asked a judge to block the deal. They said it could unjustly enrich people close to Trump. 🇵🇸 Gaza marks Nakba inside a larger ruin. Palestinians in Gaza marked the 78th anniversary of the Nakba. Nakba means catastrophe in Arabic. It refers to the 1948 mass expulsion and flight of more than 750K Palestinians during Israel’s creation. Yusuf Abu Hamam was forced from al-Joura as an infant. That village was demolished by the Israeli military. It now sits under parts of Ashkelon and a national park. Abu Hamam later built his life in Gaza’s Shati refugee camp. That home is now also wrecked by war. Palestinians say today’s catastrophe is worse because exile has become siege. The vocabulary is no longer only historical. It now includes annexation, apartheid, ethnic cleansing, famine, genocide, illegal occupation, irredentism, and settler-colonialism. Those terms carry legal, political, and moral weight. They also describe a world where displacement is repeated rather than remembered. Israel says its war is against Hamas. Palestinians see a people being uprooted again. The Nakba is no longer just an anniversary. It is a calendar that refuses to close.

🇮🇷 Iran says trust is the missing fuel. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says mistrust is blocking talks to end the war, blaming tensions in the Strait of Hormuz on American aggression. He said contradictory messages from Washington had made Tehran doubt American intentions. President Trump dismissed Iran’s latest formal proposal as garbage earlier this week. Iran’s offer reportedly included some nuclear concessions. Trump wants highly enriched uranium removed from Iran. He also wants to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons. Iran says its nuclear program is peaceful. The shaky ceasefire has not restored confidence. The Strait of Hormuz remains under Iranian pressure. 🚉 Long Island’s rail clock runs down. North America’s largest commuter rail system faces a possible shutdown. The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) serves New York City’s eastern suburbs. It has been negotiating for months with unionized workers. The unions represent engineers, machinists, signal workers, and other employees. A strike was temporarily averted in September. President Trump’s administration then agreed to help. Those efforts ended without a deal. Both sides received 60 days to resolve the dispute. That deadline ends at 12:01 a.m. Saturday. Five unions represent about half of the system’s 7K workers. The LIRR carries about 250K customers each weekday. Workers last struck in 1994. That walkout lasted about two days. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) says it will offer limited free shuttle buses. Those buses would run from designated LIRR stations to subway stops in Queens. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul urged riders to work from home where possible. The commuter economy may be one failed handshake from a regional migraine.

🚨 Border Patrol loses its chief. American Border Patrol Chief Michael Banks is resigning. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed the move Thursday. Banks first announced the decision in a Fox News interview. He said it was time to enjoy family and life. He also said he got the ship back on course. Banks led an agency central to President Trump’s immigration crackdown. His resignation is the latest leadership change inside the department. 🇨🇳 Xi puts Taiwan back in the center. President Trump’s Beijing summit turned sharper behind closed doors. Chinese President Xi Jinping warned that Taiwan could trigger conflict if handled badly. That was the steel inside the silk. Publicly, Trump praised Xi as a friend. Privately, Xi called Taiwan the most important issue in China-American relations. The two leaders met for about two hours at the Great Hall of the People. The welcome was pure state theater. Cannons boomed. Bands played both anthems. Hundreds of schoolchildren waved flowers and flags. The pageantry could not hide the gap. Taiwan is self-ruled. China claims it as its own territory. The Trump administration has approved an $11B arms package for Taiwan. It has not started fulfilling it. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said American policy toward Taiwan is unchanged. He also warned China against taking the island by force. Trump said Xi wants to help end the Iran war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The summit produced symbolism first and solutions later, if later arrives.

🇬🇧 Streeting turns Labour’s crisis formal. British Health Secretary Wes Streeting resigned Thursday. His departure turned Labour’s whispers into open rebellion. Streeting is seen as a possible challenger to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. He said he had lost confidence in Starmer. He also said Starmer should not serve out the rest of his term. In his resignation letter, Streeting praised Starmer for keeping Britain out of the Iran war. Then he delivered the cut. He wrote that where Britain needs vision, there is vacuum. Where it needs direction, there is drift. Starmer replied without engaging the attack. He said he was truly sorry to see Streeting leave. He then appointed James Murray to replace him. Labour’s recent local and regional election losses created the opening. A challenger needs 81 Labour lawmakers to force a leadership contest. Angela Rayner said Starmer should reflect on his position. Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham is also circling, though he lacks a Parliament seat. Starmer is still prime minister, but his party is now auditing the lease.

🏘️ Texas suburbs own the growth map. Small Texas cities are leading American population growth. Census Bureau estimates released Thursday show the pattern clearly. Celina, Princeton, Melissa, and Anna all sit inside the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. They ranked first, third, fourth, and fifth among the fastest-growing cities with at least 20K residents. Fulshear, in metro Houston, ranked second. Those five Texas cities grew almost 15% to almost 25% from mid-2024 to mid-2025. Celina now has about 64K residents. It added 12,700 people in one year. That was more raw growth than Seattle or Houston. Census Bureau statistician Matt Erickson said small and midsized cities found a sweet spot. They offered jobs, affordability, and proximity to major metros. Nine of the 10 biggest numeric gainers were in the South. Charlotte, Fort Worth, San Antonio, and Celina led that category. Fort Worth passed Jacksonville to become America’s 10th-largest city. Austin passed San Jose and topped 1M residents. The map is not just moving south. It is moving to the outer ring.

🚨 Livestream persona becomes a felony case. Dalton Eatherly has been charged with attempted murder after a Tennessee courthouse shooting. Eatherly is 28. Online, he goes by “Chud the Builder.” Authorities say he livestreams himself making racially derogatory statements to Black people in public. The shooting happened Wednesday outside a courthouse in Clarksville. District Attorney Robert J. Nash said Eatherly and another man got into a confrontation. Gunfire followed. Nash did not say why Eatherly was at the courthouse. Police did not identify the other man. A witness described him as Black. Both men were taken to hospitals. Both were stable. Eatherly was held in Montgomery County jail. He was also charged with employing a firearm during a dangerous felony, aggravated assault, and reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon. Witness Claire Martin said Eatherly is known locally for antagonizing people while filming. Eatherly later posted video saying he fired in self-defense. The internet rewards spectacle until reality invoices the performance.

📈 Cisco carries the Dow past 50K. Wall Street hit more records Thursday. Cisco Systems Inc. ($CSCO) led the climb. The company beat profit and revenue expectations. Its stock jumped 13.4%. That was its best day in nearly 15 years. Chief Executive Officer Chuck Robbins cited broad demand for Cisco products. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index (S&P 500) rose 0.8% to another record. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 370 points. It closed above 50K for the first time since the Iran war began. The Nasdaq composite rose 0.9% to its own record. Artificial intelligence kept doing the heavy lifting. Cerebras Systems raised $5.55B in its initial public offering. Its shares surged 68.1% in their Nasdaq debut. BlackRock strategist Gargi Pal Chaudhuri said artificial intelligence gains are broadening into semiconductors, infrastructure, and industry. Brent crude oil still settled at $105.72. The market can celebrate and flinch in the same breath.

🛒 Shoppers start rationing desire. American retail sales slowed in April. Higher gas prices ate into discretionary budgets. Shoppers still spent, but less freely. Commerce Department data showed retail sales rose 0.5%. That followed a revised 1.6% gain in March. March was the strongest monthly retail jump in more than three years. Much of that came from rapidly rising gas prices. Excluding gas stations, April retail sales rose 0.3%. That was down from 0.7% in March. Department-store sales fell 3.2%. Furniture and home-furnishing sales fell 2%. Restaurants rose 0.6%. The control group used to calculate economic growth rose 0.5%. Economists saw that as a decent sign. Yet gasoline averaged $4.53 per gallon Thursday. That was $1.35 higher than a year earlier. Oliver Allen of Pantheon said larger tax refunds helped offset gas pain. He warned relief fades in May. When fuel gets expensive, wants get postponed first.

🇨🇳 Trump lands in Beijing’s pressure chamber. President Trump arrived in Beijing on Wednesday. His summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping begins Thursday. The agenda is Iran, trade, artificial intelligence, and American arms sales to Taiwan. China gave Trump a red-carpet welcome after Air Force One landed. Chinese Vice President Han Zheng greeted him at Beijing Capital International Airport. So did Chinese Ambassador to Washington Xie Feng. America’s envoy to Beijing, David Perdue, also attended. The welcome included a military honor guard. Trump said the two countries are the world’s superpowers. The visit comes as inflation and the Iran war weigh on his standing at home. Trump wants trade wins, including Chinese purchases of American soybeans, beef, and aircraft. His administration also wants a Board of Trade to manage disputes. Last year’s tariff war ended in a one-year truce after China used rare-earth controls as leverage. Iran now crowds every meeting. The Strait of Hormuz remains effectively closed. Trump says Xi does not need to help resolve the conflict, but Beijing’s oil ties make that difficult to believe.

🇪🇺 World Cup fans get a visa-bond reprieve. Foreign World Cup ticket holders from several qualifying countries will avoid a steep American visa bond. The State Department said Wednesday it will suspend the requirement for eligible visitors. The bond could have cost as much as $15K. The rule applies to travelers from countries with high visa overstay rates and other security concerns. Fifty countries face the broader bond policy. Five have qualified for the World Cup. They are Algeria, Cape Verde, Ivory Coast, Senegal, and Tunisia. Citizens from those countries who bought tickets through FIFA are now exempt. Players, coaches, and some staff were already exempt. 📚 America’s reading recession deepens. American students remain stuck in a reading recession. New Education Recovery Scorecard data show the average student is still nearly half a grade level behind pre-pandemic levels in reading and math. Researchers analyzed test scores for more than 5K districts. The analysis covered third through eighth grade in 38 states. Only five states plus the District of Columbia posted meaningful reading-score growth from 2022 to 2025. The longer slide predates COVID. Reading scores have been falling since 2013 for eighth graders. They have been falling since 2015 for fourth graders. Harvard professor Thomas Kane called the pandemic a mudslide after years of erosion. Modesto, California is an outlier. Its elementary schools have posted consistent reading and math gains. Teacher Nancy Barajas even starts testing days with music and dancing to calm students. Researchers say many improving states shifted toward phonics-based instruction. Louisiana, Maryland, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Indiana all ordered schools to teach the science of reading. Math looks stronger, with nearly every state improving since 2022. The lesson is not mysterious. Children cannot skim their way out of a literacy crisis.

🏛️ Senate Republicans grow wary of Iran. Republican resistance to the Iran war is widening in the Senate. Democrats again tried to advance legislation that would halt President Trump’s war. The measure failed 49-50. The vote still showed movement. Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska voted against the war for the first time. Republican Sens. Susan Collins of Maine and Rand Paul of Kentucky also opposed it again. Democratic Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania was the only Democrat to vote against the resolution. Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia said the Senate may soon tell Trump to stop the war. The White House says it does not need congressional authorization. Officials argue hostilities have effectively ended because a ceasefire exists. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told lawmakers America could resume attacks without new approval. 🏦 Warsh inherits the inflation cage. The Senate confirmed Kevin Warsh as Federal Reserve chairman today. President Trump’s nominee won a largely party-line 54-45 vote. Warsh is 56. He is a former top Fed official. He will replace Jerome Powell as chair of the world’s most powerful central bank, amidst brutal timing: inflation has topped the Fed’s 2% 5-year target, gasoline prices have surged because of the Iran war, and the Fed’s rate-setting committee just saw its most dissenting votes in more than three decades. Powell plans to stay on the Fed board after leaving the chair role. That could create an unusual competing power center. Trump has repeatedly attacked Powell for not cutting interest rates. Republican Sen. Thom Tillis backed Warsh after a Justice Department probe of Powell was dropped in April. Warsh says he will be independent. Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren called him too close to Trump. Democrats also criticized Warsh for not fully disclosing wealth of at least $100M. He promised to sell holdings including stakes in Polymarket and SpaceX within 90 days.

📈 Tech drags Wall Street upward anyway. Technology stocks carried Wall Street to fresh records Wednesday. The broader market was less impressed. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index (S&P 500) rose 0.6%. The Nasdaq composite climbed 1.2% to a record. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 67 points. Micron Technology Inc. ($MU) rose 4.8%. ON Semiconductor Corporation ($ON) gained 11.1%. NVIDIA Corporation ($NVDA) rose 2.3% and gave the S&P 500 its biggest lift. Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang was invited to join President Trump in China. The trip could involve talks over shipping NVIDIA artificial intelligence chips to China. SoftBank Group Corp. ($SFTBY) said annual profit rose nearly fivefold on artificial intelligence investments. Alibaba Group Holding Limited ($BABA) rose 8.2% in American trading after stronger artificial intelligence and cloud growth. Most stocks outside technology fell. Wholesale inflation came in hotter than economists expected. Brent crude settled at $105.63, still far above its prewar level near $70. The 10-year Treasury yield edged up to 4.47%. 🇬🇧 Starmer’s party turns on him. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer says he will not resign. That answer is becoming less persuasive inside his own party. Several junior ministers quit Tuesday. Miatta Fahnbulleh, minister of housing, communities and local government, was first to step down. She urged Starmer to set a timetable for departure. Jess Phillips, the safeguarding minister, followed. She called Starmer fundamentally good but unable to make bold changes. Around 90 Labour lawmakers now say he should quit or name an exit date. Labour rules require 81 lawmakers to back one challenger before a leadership race begins. No challenger has done that yet. Starmer told his Cabinet the process had not been triggered. He also said the past 48 hours had destabilized government and carried real economic cost. Labour’s local-election losses sharpened the panic. Reform UK, the Green Party, and nationalist parties all took bites from Labour’s coalition. Starmer still has the office, not the room.

🇨🇳 Trump and Xi try to fence off Iran. President Trump is heading to Beijing to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping. The Iran war will be in the room before either leader sits down. Trump has tried for weeks to push China to pressure Tehran. The goal is an Iranian deal or at least a reopened Strait of Hormuz. China is the world’s biggest buyer of Iranian oil. It also imports about half its crude and nearly one-third of its liquefied natural gas from Middle Eastern countries hit by the strait closure. The White House has lowered expectations. American Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said Washington does not want Iran to derail the broader relationship. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent have increased pressure on Beijing. The State Department sanctioned three China-based firms over satellite imagery tied to Iranian strikes on American forces. Beijing called the sanctions illegal unilateral pressure. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi hosted Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi last week. Analyst Craig Singleton said Xi wants tariff predictability and recognition of Chinese leverage. Trump wants cooperation without restarting a tariff war. Xi wants enduring global influence.

⛽ Gasoline drags inflation back into politics. American consumer prices rose sharply again in April. The Labor Department’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) climbed 3.8% from April 2025. That was the biggest annual jump in three years. It was also up from 3.3% in March. Monthly prices rose 0.6% from March. Gasoline prices rose 5.4% in one month. They are up more than 28% from a year earlier by federal data. The American Automobile Association (AAA) put regular gasoline above $4.50 Tuesday. That is about 44% higher than the same time last year. Grocery prices rose 0.7% from March to April. Meat prices rose after falling the prior month. Core prices, excluding food and energy, rose 0.4% for the month and 2.8% annually. Navy Federal Credit Union economist Heather Long said inflation is now eating wage gains. Real average hourly wages fell 0.3%; pump prices have turned into a campaign-season tax.

🏨 World Cup hotels wait for the wave. American hotels expected the World Cup to print money. The bookings have not arrived that way yet. The American Hotel & Lodging Association surveyed operators in April. It found softer demand across most of the 11 American host cities. Kansas City, Boston, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Seattle reported bookings behind normal seasonal demand. New York City, Los Angeles, Dallas, and Houston looked flat. Hotel executives blamed international travel concerns, visa wait times, ticket costs, and transit expenses. Michael Black, general manager of the Cloud One hotel in Manhattan, said expectations met a messier world. Mexico City hotels are only about 30% to 36% booked ahead of the June 11th opener. Prices may be part of the problem. A New Jersey hotel near MetLife Stadium moved from about $200 a night to $800 around June matches. It rises above $1,300 before the July 19th final. Fan advocate Ronan Evain said experienced tournament travelers often wait for inflated hotel prices to fall. Airbnb Inc. ($ABNB) says its rentals could still see the company’s biggest hosting event ever. More than 5M tickets have been sold. Hotels are learning that attention and occupancy are not the same product.

The Nasdaq composite fell 2% from its own record. The damage centered on artificial intelligence (AI) stocks. Intel Corporation ($INTC) fell 10.5% after more than tripling this year. Micron Technology Inc. ($MU) dropped 9.8% after rising nearly 180% in 2026. CoreWeave Inc. ($CRWV) sank 10.8%. South Korea’s Kospi index fell 2.3% earlier from an all-time high. Oil added another bruise. Brent crude rose 3.3% to $107.66 as the Iran ceasefire looked weaker. The Strait of Hormuz closure continues trapping oil tankers in the Persian Gulf. Treasury yields rose as investors reconsidered Federal Reserve (Fed) patience. The 10-year Treasury yield reached 4.45%, above 3.97% before the war. Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged Indians to buy locally and travel less abroad. The Philippines moved to a four-day workweek to save fuel. 🇮🇷 Iran ceasefire diplomacy enters triage. President Trump says the Iran ceasefire is on life support. That is not diplomacy as theater. It is diplomacy in triage. Trump rejected Tehran’s latest proposal after officials said it offered some nuclear concessions. He also said Iran failed to put a promised uranium extraction provision in writing. Iran says its nuclear program is peaceful. It has not publicly agreed to give up uranium enrichment. The standoff leaves the Strait of Hormuz closed. That waterway remains a global artery for oil and gas. America is also blockading Iranian ports. Trump wants Chinese President Xi Jinping to pressure Iran. China is the largest buyer of Iranian sanctioned crude. Iran’s proposal sought American recognition of its sovereignty over Hormuz. It also asked to reopen the strait while broader negotiations continue. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel and America could reengage militarily if talks fail. The ceasefire exists on paper. The markets are already pricing the paper as flammable.

🚆 Six bodies found dead from Texas heat. Six people were found dead inside a shipping container at a Texas rail yard. Federal agents are investigating it as a potential human smuggling event. The container was at a Union Pacific Corporation ($UNP) rail yard in Laredo. Laredo sits near the border with Mexico. A Union Pacific employee found the bodies Sunday afternoon. Jose Baeza, public information officer for the Laredo Police Department, confirmed the discovery. Webb County medical examiner Dr. Corinne Stern is conducting autopsies. She completed one autopsy on a 29-year-old Mexican woman. Stern ruled that death accidental from hyperthermia, or heat stroke. She believes the others may also have died from heat stroke. She estimated they may have died in less than eight hours. Identification cards and phones suggested some victims may be from Mexico and Honduras. Fingerprints were shared with Border Patrol through the Missing Alien Program. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) is assisting Laredo police and Texas Rangers. The container’s travel history remains unclear. So does why the people inside could not climb out.

⚖️ Mifepristone access gets a temporary stay. The Supreme Court kept mifepristone access intact for now. Justice Samuel Alito issued the temporary order Monday. It protects pharmacy and mail access until at least Thursday. It also preserves access without an in-person doctor visit. The case concerns mifepristone, a widely used abortion pill. Louisiana is challenging Food and Drug Administration (FDA) rules that eased access. The state says those rules undermine its abortion ban. It also questions the drug’s safety. FDA scientists first approved mifepristone in 2000. They have repeatedly deemed it safe and effective. Lower courts sided with Louisiana for now. The 5th Circuit Court of Appeals said mail and telehealth access should be suspended during litigation. Medication abortions accounted for nearly two-thirds of American abortions in 2023. Mainstream medical groups and drug companies warned against restricting the pill. They said a ruling for abortion opponents could disrupt the drug approval system. The court’s pause keeps the fight suspended, not settled.

🚧 Gas-tax relief runs into Congress. President Trump wants to suspend the federal gasoline tax. He cannot do it alone. Congress would have to approve. The political pitch is simple. Gas averaged $4.52 a gallon Monday. That was 50% higher than before the Iran war began. The federal tax is 18.4 cents per gallon on gasoline. Diesel carries a 24.4 cent federal tax. Those taxes generate more than $23B yearly for highways and public transit. Trump said the suspension should last until appropriate. Republican Sen. Josh Hawley said he will introduce legislation. Republican Rep. Anna Paulina Luna said she will do the same. Senate Majority Leader John Thune sounded skeptical. He said he would rather reopen the Strait of Hormuz and normalize prices. Republican Sen. Rand Paul said the tax is not the real issue. He said the war should be suspended instead. The policy is relief politics with an infrastructure bill attached.

📈 Wall Street prices war and shrugs. Oil rose Monday, but American stocks still edged higher. Brent crude climbed 2.9% to $104.21. The increase followed President Trump’s warning that the Iran ceasefire was on life support. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index (S&P 500) rose 0.2%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 95 points. The Nasdaq composite added 0.1% to another record. The market is not calm. It is selective. Most stocks inside the S&P 500 fell. The Mosaic Company ($MOS) dropped 1.8% after weaker quarterly results. Dollar General Corporation ($DG) fell 7.6% as fuel pressure hit low-cushion consumers. Royal Caribbean Group ($RCL) fell 4.3%. Southwest Airlines Co. ($LUV) lost 3.2%. Fox Corporation ($FOXA) rose 7.6% on stronger profit and revenue. More than four-fifths of reporting S&P 500 companies have beaten earnings expectations. FactSet says earnings growth is tracking near 28%. War is expensive, but profits are still doing pushups.

🇮🇨 Cruise passengers leave a viral limbo. Passengers evacuated from the MV Hondius began flying home Sunday. The cruise ship had anchored near Tenerife in the Canary Islands. Spanish passengers left first and flew to Madrid. They were taken to a military hospital. French passengers later landed in Paris. Emergency vehicles met their flight. Small vessels carried passengers from the ship to Granadilla port. Officials then moved them by bus toward quarantine. Flights were expected to remove travelers from more than 20 countries. The evacuation was expected to last until Monday. One of five French passengers developed symptoms during the flight. French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu said all five were put in strict isolation. Earlier, the Spanish Health Ministry, World Health Organization (WHO), and Oceanwide Expeditions said more than 140 people aboard had shown no symptoms. Three people have died since the outbreak began. Five passengers who left the ship earlier are infected with hantavirus. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said this is not another COVID and public risk remains low. Passengers still left in protective gear, without luggage, and with only essentials.

🇮🇷 Narges Mohammadi reaches a Tehran hospital. Nobel Peace laureate Narges Mohammadi has been transferred to a Tehran hospital. The 53-year-old Iranian human rights activist had collapsed in prison more than a week earlier. Her foundation said the transfer followed days of pleading by relatives and supporters. It also said her prison sentence was suspended on bail. The length of that suspension remains unclear. Mohammadi had been imprisoned since December in Zanjan prison. She lost consciousness twice and was moved to a local hospital on May 1st. Her foundation said the suspension is not enough. It wants permanent specialized care and unconditional freedom. Her lawyer, Mostafa Nili, said government-appointed medical examiners found she needed treatment outside prison. Iranian authorities did not immediately comment. Her brother Hamidreza said medical examiners had recommended transfer before. He blamed Iran’s intelligence agency for blocking the move. She won the Nobel in 2023 while incarcerated, and has been jailed repeatedly for her rights work. Her family says her health deteriorated after she was heavily beaten during arrest. She had a heart attack in March and has a blood clot in her lung.

🇺🇸 LOCAL NEWS

💻 Canvas breaks finals week’s brittle machinery. A cyberattack on Canvas has disrupted final exam season across American schools. Canvas is the online platform colleges use for exams, course notes, lecture videos, grades, and messages. Its parent company, Instructure, said most users regained access by late Thursday. That did not end the academic scramble. Some schools kept blocking access out of caution. The hacking group ShinyHunters claimed responsibility. Luke Connolly, a threat analyst at cybersecurity firm Emsisoft, said the group made the claim. ShinyHunters said nearly 9,000 schools and 275M individuals’ data could be leaked. It set a May 6th ransom deadline, then extended it. The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth postponed Friday and Saturday exams. The University of Illinois postponed all exams scheduled from Friday through Sunday. Montgomery County Public Schools in Maryland continued limiting access. Steve Proud, Instructure’s chief information security officer, said exposed data appeared to include student identification numbers, emails, names, and Canvas messages. He said passwords, birth dates, government identification, and financial data were not found compromised. The outage showed how education outsourced its nervous system to one login screen.

🥩 Meatpacking data gets an antitrust reckoning. President Trump’s administration has reached a proposed settlement in a meatpacking antitrust case. The case targets Agri Stats, an Indiana-based data-sharing company. The Department of Justice (DOJ) said the deal is meant to help lower grocery prices. The case was first brought under the Biden administration. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche called affordable food central to national well-being. Federal officials said Agri Stats collected nonpublic information from meat processors. They said it shared detailed reports with chicken, pork, and turkey processors. The government alleged those reports helped processors inflate prices charged to restaurants, grocery stores, and other buyers. Under the settlement, Agri Stats must share most processor data with American buyers. Agri Stats President Eric Scholer said the company was pleased to put the case behind it. He also said Agri Stats helped improve chicken industry efficiency. The DOJ is separately investigating beef-processing antitrust questions. That investigation followed Trump’s request to examine whether foreign-owned meatpackers were pushing beef prices higher. Ground beef averaged $6.70 per pound in March. That was 16% higher than a year earlier. Drought, small herds, labor costs, and blocked Mexican cattle imports are also pushing prices.

🗺️ Tucson maps immigration enforcement. Tucson migrant advocates have built a public map of immigration enforcement. The tool is called Tucson Migra Map. It tracks activity by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other federal agencies. Its launch comes as arrests rise under President Trump’s mass deportation initiative. Activist Lucia Vindiola said enforcement has disrupted families’ ability to shop for groceries and supplies. Vindiola founded La Bodega, a mutual-aid group helping affected residents. Immigration-related detentions in fiscal year 2025 more than tripled in the Tucson area. They rose from fewer than 200 in late 2024 to more than 800 by June 2025. Geographer Dugan Meyer, a University of Arizona doctoral student, helped create the map. He also volunteers with Tucson Rapid Response. The database draws from spreadsheets maintained since January 2025. It tracks raids, vehicle stops, and aerial surveillance. Incidents are labeled confirmed or credible but unconfirmed. Meyer said about 562 incidents had been reviewed by late April. Around 300 met the threshold for inclusion. Federal officials say tracking can endanger officers. The map’s creators say it reports past enforcement, not real-time locations.

🇪🇹 Ethiopia turns oil pain into an electric bet. Electric vehicles (EVs) are moving from climate promise to survival math in Ethiopia. Africa imported 44,358 EVs from China in 2025, up from 19,386 in 2024. Those shipments were worth more than $200M. Ethiopia now has more than 115K EVs on its roads. They account for about 8% of the national fleet. The country banned new gas and diesel vehicle imports in 2024. In 2025, it took roughly one-third of Africa’s EV imports from China. The Iran war has made the case brutally practical. Ethiopia spends about $4.2B a year on fuel imports. Trade and Regional Integration Minister Kassahun Gofe says subsidies now reach up to $128M monthly. He also said fuel shipments fell short by more than 180K metric tons. The Strait of Hormuz crisis turned range anxiety into national-security arithmetic. Ethiopia has an advantage many countries lack. More than 90% of its electricity comes from renewables, mainly hydro and solar. The obstacle is not appetite, but infrastructure, affordability, and last-mile power.

🇯🇵 Nintendo’s sequel console meets tariff reality. Nintendo Co. ($NTDOY) delivered the kind of year most companies would frame in gold leaf. Its annual profit rose 52% to ¥424B, or about $2.7B. Sales rose 99% to ¥2.3T, or about $15B. The boom came from Switch 2 hardware and software demand. Then Nintendo raised prices. In Japan, Switch 2 rises to ¥59,980 from ¥49,980 on May 25th. In the American market, it moves to $499.99 in September from $449.99. The company cited changing market conditions and the global business outlook. The Kyoto-based maker of Mario and Pokémon did not itemize every pressure. The backdrop includes President Trump’s tariff hikes and wider cost inflation from the Iran war. Nintendo now forecasts an 11% profit decline through March 2027. It expects Switch 2 hardware sales to fall to 16.5M units. That is down nearly 17% from 19.86M last year. Software is the cushion, with sales forecast at 60M, up 23%. Strong demand remains, but pricing comes with a tariff bill.

The aircraft was Frontier Airlines Flight 4345, operated by Frontier Group Holdings ($ULCC). It was headed from Denver to Los Angeles International Airport late Friday. Airport officials said the plane reported striking a pedestrian at about 11:19 p.m. The person had jumped a perimeter fence. A spokesperson said they were hit about two minutes after entering the airport. The person was not believed to be an airport employee. The collision sparked an engine fire and sent smoke into the cabin. The pilots aborted takeoff with 224 passengers and seven crew aboard. Passengers evacuated by inflatable slides and were bused to the terminal. Twelve passengers had minor injuries. Five were taken to hospitals. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) was notified. Runway 17L closed during the investigation and reopened around 11 a.m. Saturday. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said the person deliberately scaled the fence and ran onto the runway.

🧳 Utah custody fight crosses into Cuba. A Utah couple now faces parental kidnapping charges in a custody fight involving a 10-year-old child. The defendants are Rose Inessa-Ethington and Blue Inessa-Ethington. Rose Inessa-Ethington is a transgender woman identified in court documents as the child’s biological father. Federal officials say the couple took the child to Cuba during a shared-custody dispute. President Trump’s administration sent a government plane to retrieve the child this week. Officials cited concerns that the child had been taken to Havana for gender transition surgery. Court documents do not establish whether such surgery was actually planned. Cuban law does not allow such surgery for children. The planned trip had been described as camping in Calgary, Canada. Authorities say the group instead traveled to Vancouver, Mexico City, and then Cuba. The child’s biological mother contacted police in Logan, Utah after they missed an April 3rd return date. Logan City Police spokesperson Sgt. Brandon Bevan said one relative raised the surgery concern. He also said no physical evidence was offered. A Utah judge later granted the mother sole custody. Jeff Berardelli, WFLA-TV’s chief meteorologist and climate specialist, expects extreme conditions. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) says an event may develop from midyear. It cautions that spring forecasts are harder to trust. El Niño is natural warming in the equatorial Pacific. It can rearrange rainfall, heat, drought, and storms worldwide. It does make the risk serious. Berardelli says more heat can intensify heat waves, drought, and floods. He also says Atlantic hurricanes may be suppressed as Pacific heat dominates. Pennsylvania climate scientist Michael Mann says the longer-term threat remains anthropogenic, or human-driven, warming.

📖 New textbook widens the record. The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Asian American Studies Center has launched a free digital textbook. It is called “Foundations and Futures: Asian American and Pacific Islander Multimedia Textbook.” The project is designed for high school and college educators nationwide. It centers Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) history beyond stock textbook cameos. Karen Umemoto, the center’s director and a co-editor, framed it as a fight for visibility. Kelly Fong, another co-editor, said younger readers will see their communities represented. The project took years and involved 100 contributors. It cost $12M and launched during AAPI Heritage Month. Its chapters will expand over time. The first slate covers more than familiar stories of Japanese detention and Chinese laborers. 🇬🇧 Starmer keeps the job, not the mandate. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer says he will not resign. The local election results gave him every reason to sound defensive. His Labour Party suffered heavy losses. Reform UK made major gains. Nigel Farage’s hard-right party won hundreds of local council seats. It performed especially well in working-class northern areas that once looked like Labour furniture. It also took ground from Conservatives in places such as Essex. The elections were widely treated as a referendum on Starmer. His popularity has fallen sharply since Labour returned to power less than two years ago. Voters are impatient. They want growth. They want visible change. Labour lawmakers are increasingly anxious about drift. Starmer said he took responsibility for “very tough” results. He also said he would not walk away and plunge Britain into chaos. That line was part resolve, part warning. Reform is now selling itself as the outlet for impatience. Starmer still holds Downing Street for now, but the question is whether he still holds the public argument in London.

🇨🇺 Rubio tightens the vise on Cuba’s military economy. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is defending new sanctions on Cuban Grupo de Administración Empresarial S.A. (GAESA). That is the military-run conglomerate embedded across Cuba’s economy. The sanctions also include Moa Nickel, a Cuban joint venture with Canada’s Sherritt International. Sherritt said it would withdraw, ending a 32-year presence on the island. The measures follow President Trump’s May 1st executive order. They expand the government’s power to punish third-country firms and nationals. The practical effect is fear. Banks, insurers, investors, and foreign partners now face a larger liability field. Cuban economist Pavel Vidal called the measures very concerning for an economy already nearly paralyzed. He said GAESA commands nearly 40% of Cuba’s gross domestic product. He also said it held $14.5B in liquid reserves in early 2024. Its revenues are reportedly triple the Cuban state budget. GAESA touches hotels, retail, finance, travel, currency exchanges, and services. That reach is why sanctions on one conglomerate can feel like sanctions on a national nervous system. Rubio calls it pressure on the regime. Meanwhile, Cubans will feel it as another tightening around an economy already short of air.

🛸 The UFO files land without answers. The Pentagon has begun releasing new unidentified flying object files. The official phrase is unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP). The old public phrase is still UFO. President Trump framed the release as transparency. He told people to decide for themselves what is going on. That invitation is politically useful and epistemologically chaotic. The files include Buzz Aldrin seeing a bright light source aboard Apollo 11. They include an object making multiple 90-degree turns at speed. They include a bright object doing corkscrew twists over Kazakhstan. They also include photographs of alleged flying saucer specimens. None of that means aliens. It does mean the government is opening archives that have long fed suspicion. The Pentagon had already been working on declassification. Trump made it a spectacle. That is the modern formula. Bureaucracy supplies the files. Politics supplies the spotlight. The public supplies interpretation. The release may not settle the extraterrestrial question. It does show how mystery now functions as civic entertainment. America got documents, not closure.

📚 Humanities cuts hit a constitutional wall. A federal judge in Manhattan ruled that President Trump’s cancellation of more than $100M in humanities grants was unconstitutional. Judge Colleen McMahon sided with the Authors Guild and other plaintiffs. The ruling also covered the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). McMahon permanently barred the administration from terminating the grants. She said the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) lacked lawful authority to end them. More than 1,400 congressionally approved grants had been cut. Government lawyers said the cancellations implemented Trump’s directives and reduced discretionary spending. The judge rejected that logic. She said the government violated the First Amendment and the Fifth Amendment’s equal protection guarantee. She called some cancellations textbook viewpoint discrimination. The sharpest detail involved artificial intelligence. Officials used ChatGPT to identify diversity, equity, and inclusion related projects for cuts. McMahon said using AI did not excuse unconstitutional conduct. One grant targeted as DEI involved short fiction by Jewish writers from the Soviet Union. The ruling is about money. It is also about who gets to turn culture into contraband.

That is its longest such streak since 2024. Investors are betting the Iran war will not become a worst-case economic shock. They are also betting the Strait of Hormuz may reopen enough to normalize oil flows. That confidence is not clean. 🇳🇱 Hantavirus leaves the ship before certainty. A deadly cruise outbreak has turned the MV Hondius into a moving public health puzzle. Health authorities across four continents are now tracking passengers who left before the virus was confirmed. The Dutch-flagged ship carried nearly 150 people. A Dutch man died aboard on April 11th. His body was removed at St. Helena on April 24th. His wife disembarked there too. She later died in South Africa. The ship’s operator said 30 passengers got off at St. Helena. Dutch officials put the figure at about 40. The virus was not confirmed in a passenger until May 2nd. By then, people had already flown into other countries. The Andes virus is the urgent concern. Most hantaviruses spread through rodent waste. This strain may rarely move between people. Hantavirus infections can cause hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS). They can also cause hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS). That makes the story less about panic than timing. The outbreak became harder to contain before anyone fully knew what it was.

🌎 Contact tracing becomes a global dragnet. Public health officials are now trying to reconstruct a social map after the damage began. The World Health Organization (WHO) counted eight recorded cases. Five have been confirmed by laboratory testing. Three people have died. The specific Andes virus species has been confirmed in multiple patients. The Netherlands is testing a symptomatic flight attendant. South Africa is tracing contacts from an April 25th flight. Spain’s Canary Islands are preparing for the ship’s arrival. Germany is tied to a fatal case still involving the vessel. Switzerland has confirmed an affected traveler who disembarked earlier. Officials are also monitoring people in other countries. Contact tracing is supposed to find exposed people before symptoms travel further. That task is harder when passengers cross borders.
