🇪🇺 Europe fires rage. Hundreds of firefighters battled wildfires across Portugal, Greece, and Spain on Sunday. Spain and Italy sent help to Portugal. The biggest Portuguese fire burned in the central Vouzela area. More than 1.2K firefighters, nearly 400 vehicles, and 15 aircraft fought that blaze. European Union satellite mapping showed it had burned 12K hectares, or about 30K acres. Portugal’s fire appeared to be easing by Sunday afternoon. Officials still warned that hot spots remained. Spain sent 120 firefighters and 45 vehicles as reinforcements. Three firefighting aircraft from Italy and Spain also joined the effort. In northeastern Spain’s Girona region, a wildfire had burned nearly 2.2K hectares. Its perimeter stretched about 40 kilometers, or 25 miles. In Greece, toxic smoke from a burning recycling plant near Thessaloniki forced residents indoors. Evacuation alerts covered three suburbs and a facility housing 157 people with disabilities. Greek fire officials said about 85% of wildfires there are caused by negligence. Southern Europe again showed how heat turns carelessness into a continent-scale emergency.

🇨🇳 Maysak floods China. Heavy rains killed five people in northern China this weekend. Tropical Storm Maysak struck southern China and Vietnam. Two villagers died Saturday in a mountain flash flood in eastern Inner Mongolia. One drowned while herding cattle. Another fell into water while moving cattle away. Three others died the same day in Liaoning province’s Fushun city. A heavy rainstorm battered Fushun for several hours early Saturday. Rainfall reached 32.9 centimeters in one area. Video showed streets turned into lakes. About 3.6K residents were moved to safer places. Maysak made landfall Saturday night in Vietnam’s Quang Ninh province. Winds reached 101 kilometers per hour, or 63 miles per hour. It weakened as it moved inland toward Guangxi. In Fangchenggang, rivers overflowed and cars were submerged up to their roofs. The storm moved like a map lesson, teaching each border what water can erase.

🛂 New citizens take oath. One hundred fifty people from 50 countries became United States citizens Saturday. The ceremony took place at George Washington’s Mount Vernon. It came on July 4th and America’s 250th birthday. The crowd sat on Washington’s lawn under punishing sun. Families held American flags and paddle fans. Anne Neal Petri, regent of the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association, opened the ceremony. Marine Sgt. Diakaria Sangare from Guinea attended in Dress Blue uniform. He had served two deployments. Others came from countries marked by violence or persecution. Participants stood as their countries were called. The list stretched from Albania to Bangladesh, China, El Salvador, Iraq, Mongolia, and Morocco. They recited the Oath of Allegiance with raised hands. They then said the Pledge of Allegiance. Nearby stood a tulip poplar planted at Washington’s direction 250 years ago. Citizenship became the holiday’s sharpest argument, spoken by people who had just earned its grammar.

🗽 Bridge fire hits show. A fire broke out on the Brooklyn Bridge during New York’s July Fourth fireworks show. Flames spread and sent smoke into the night sky. Fire crews extinguished the blaze. No injuries were reported. Two fire engines were used to put it out. Firefighters were seen dousing flames shortly before 10 p.m. The bridge had been closed to traffic during the show. A city fire department spokesperson said such fires are not unexpected. Officials keep crowds at a distance during fireworks for that reason. The show marked the United States 250th Independence Day anniversary. It involved fireworks over the Hudson and East rivers. The display had been moved earlier because of severe weather threats. Storms also canceled or delayed other East Coast celebrations. Washington evacuated National Mall crowdgoers during its holiday events. New York got its spectacle, then a reminder that spectacle always hires risk.

🏦 Trump Accounts launch. President Trump’s administration launched Trump Accounts on July 4th. The program links America’s 250th anniversary to investment accounts for children. Parents can open accounts for children born during Trump’s second term. Eligible newborns receive $1K from the government. Older children may get accounts but not the $1K bonus. Deposits opened July 4th. The United States Treasury Department planned to transfer the seed money the same day. Funds will be invested in the stock market by private firms. Children generally cannot access the money until age 18. Uses are limited to expenses such as school, a home, or starting a business. Trump said the program gives children ownership of America’s future. Dell Technologies ($DELL) founder Michael Dell and Susan Dell pledged $6.25B for some children outside the government bonus. Micron Technology ($MU) CEO Sanjay Mehrotra pledged $250M. Critics say the accounts do little for early childhood costs and sit beside food and Medicaid cuts. The birthday gift came wrapped in capitalism, but the receipt still went to politics.

🌭 World Cup eats big. World Cup fans are giving North American food rave reviews. Many came for soccer and stayed for the chewing. Jack Goodwin, a London soccer fan, praised the American food he tried in Dallas, Boston, New York, and Atlanta. International visitors are seeking regional specialties and chains they cannot get at home. Some want In-N-Out Burger and Buc-ee’s. Norway striker Erling Haaland posted a photo outside Katz’s Delicatessen in New York. Harrison Murphy, a London visitor, praised Chick-fil-A in Atlanta. Gary Bishop from Glasgow discovered poutine in Toronto. Texas beer distributor Andrews Distributing welcomed Dutch fans for Heineken and dancing. Paul Barker, founder of Boston’s Pauli’s, said fans from Scotland, Brazil, England, and elsewhere lined up for lobster rolls. Waffle House opened a downtown Atlanta World Cup pop-up. Whataburger CEO Debbie Stroud said visitors left talking about patty melts. Terry Black’s Barbecue prepared extra meat for Dallas and Fort Worth. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) even reminded ranch-dressing converts to pack bottles in checked bags. The World Cup brought nations to the table, and the table won extra time.
