πŸ‡¬πŸ‡± President Trump ties Greenland push to new tariff threats in Europe. President Donald Trump said Denmark, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Norway, Finland, Sweden, and Iceland face a 10% tariff. The White House says these latest tariffs will commence February 1st, retaliation for rejecting American control of Greenland. Trump also warned the rate could jump to 25% on June 1 without a purchase deal. Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen dismissed the idea as β€œnonsensical”, while Greenland’s Jens-Frederik Nielsen said the island is not for sale.

πŸ‡¬πŸ‡³ Doumbouya’s oath cements Guinea’s post-junta gamble. Mamady Doumbouya was sworn in as president in Conakry on Saturday. He won December’s vote under a new constitution that stretched the term to 7 years. The ceremony packed a 55,000-seat stadium as crowds waved flags. Doumbouya seized power in 2021 and later promised a civilian transition. Guinea has about 15M people, and officials say roughly half live below the poverty line. The junta’s economic focal point, the Simandou iron ore project, which is about 75% Chinese-owned, began production late last year.

πŸ›°οΈ SCOTUS weighs Fourth Amendment with β€œgeofence” location warrants. The case tests whether police can demand bulk location data from tech firms. Investigators used a Google dragnet after a 2019 Call Federal Credit Union robbery in Virginia. Prosecutors say the warrant’s radius and time window were narrowed in steps. Defense lawyers for Okello Chatrie argue it sweeps up innocent people first, suspects later. The justices are weighing how the Fourth Amendment fits phones that never stop pinging, which is a potential ruling that could rewrite what β€œprivacy” means in a world map.

Ghazala Hashmi was sworn in as lieutenant governor, making history as the first Muslim American woman to win statewide in Virginia. 🧧 Trump tariffs push Canada closer to China’s EV supply chain. Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney cut a 100% import tax on Chinese EVs for lower tariffs on Canadian canola. China dropped its canola tariff from 84% to 15%, cheering prairie exporters. Council on Foreign Relations fellow Edward Alden said Trump’s tariff swings are forcing realignment. President Donald Trump has threatened 10% tariffs on Canadian imports and hinted at more. Carney capped the deal: 49K Chinese EVs enter at 6.1%, rising toward 70K in five years. Ontario Premier Doug Ford warned jobs and American market access could be hit. Evidently, the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) renewal now looks even more combustible than ever before.
