🇮🇷 Iran strikes Gulf neighbors after American attacks resume. Iran fired missiles and drones at American allies across the Gulf after a new round of American strikes ended a monthlong lull in the six-month war. The latest escalation followed American attacks on Iranian rocket launchers in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran retaliated against American bases in Jordan, where incoming missiles were intercepted. Kuwait and Bahrain also reported Iranian attacks without casualties. Kurdish authorities in Iraq said they intercepted 10 explosive drones around Irbil. Israel said Iran-backed Hezbollah fired two explosive drones at its soldiers in southern Lebanon without causing casualties. American strikes targeted Iranian air-defense sites, radar systems and maritime assets. Iranian state media said one strike hit a home hosting a wedding in Kuhestak overlooking the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian officials reported four deaths and at least 68 wounded. The dead included two women and two children, ages 4 and 16. Iran’s currency fell to a record 2.20M rials per $1, about 10% weaker than last week’s record. Brent crude climbed to about $95 per barrel, more than 30% above its level at the war’s start. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said economic pressure would continue until Tehran abandons nuclear-weapons ambitions and support for armed groups. Iran maintains that its nuclear program is peaceful. President Trump said he would not force Tehran back to negotiations and argued Washington’s current position is stronger.
🇨🇦 Carney rebukes Trump as Canada trade fight deepens. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has sharply rebuked President Trump’s administration as the two countries’ trade dispute worsens. Carney told Washington to stop the memes, social-media jabs and attempts to look tough. He said trade negotiations could resume if American officials became serious about reaching an agreement. Talks collapsed on August 21st. Trump subsequently imposed 50% tariffs on roughly $20B of Canadian goods. Canadian retaliatory tariffs on nearly $20B of American products are scheduled for September 8th at rates from 15% to 50%. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has stressed that the American economy is about 13 times larger than Canada’s. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth also mocked Canada’s military in a social-media post. Carney called that post beneath Hegseth’s office. Carney said Washington sought terms that could reduce Canadian industries to subsidiaries of American companies. He singled out autos as one sector facing unacceptable conditions. He also said American demands touched French-language and cultural protections. Washington sought limits on Canada’s future trade agreements as well, according to Carney. His Liberal Party now holds 173 of 343 House of Commons seats after sweeping three special elections. Canadian Labour Congress President Bea Bruske said Carney warned labor leaders that relations with America may not return to normal soon.

🏠 AI wealth heats up Bay Area luxury housing. The AI boom is spilling into housing as affluent technology workers accelerate demand for luxury homes in the San Francisco Bay Area. San Francisco luxury-home sales jumped 39.3% in the first half of 2026 from a year earlier. Middle-market sales there rose 15.1%. Across the bay in Oakland, upper-market sales climbed 13.3% while middle-market sales rose 3.9%. Nationally, luxury-home sales increased 2% during the first half. Middle-market sales rose 1.9%. The median luxury-home price reached about $1.37M, up 4.3%, while the middle-market median rose 1.4% to $377,245. The broader housing market remains constrained after existing-home sales stayed near a 30-year low last year. Redfin chief economist Daryl Fairweather says wealthy buyers are less sensitive to mortgage rates and prices. Tampa luxury sales surged 35.5% while middle-market sales fell 5.1%. Nashville’s upper market rose 10.8% versus 1.7% for middle-market homes. Detroit’s high end climbed 8.7% while its middle market fell 6%. OpenAI and Anthropic filed preliminary initial public offering paperwork in June. Redfin estimates potential employee gains from those offerings could buy nearly one-third of San Francisco’s homes. AI executive Julio Bermudez recently agreed to pay $3.3M for an Orinda home after worrying that waiting could price his family out.
🛜 Record scams leave American victims with little recourse. Scams have reached record levels in America while victims often struggle to recover money and can incur new financial damage after the theft. Americans reported $15.9B in scam losses last year to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), up 25% from 2024. The FTC estimates actual 2024 losses were close to $200B, or roughly $550M per day. Polling finds 98% of Americans suspect they have been targeted by scammers. Three in 10 say they have lost money or information. AI has helped criminals operate at greater scale and sophistication. Cryptocurrency also gives many scam networks a difficult-to-trace payment channel. One widower identified as Simon lost $800K to a fake online companion. He was then left repaying $185K in borrowed money plus additional taxes. Another scammer subsequently offered to recover his funds for another payment. Interviews with nearly five dozen victims found ridicule, lender pressure, taxes and dismissive responses from authorities were common after losses. America imposes fewer reimbursement obligations on banks and platforms than several peer countries. British financial firms generally must reimburse customers tricked into sending money in covered cases. European rules can make financial institutions liable when fraud protections are inadequate. Eight in 10 Americans say the federal government is not doing enough to protect people from scams.

🛢️ Chevron commits $7B to expand Venezuelan oil production. Chevron ($CVX) has confirmed plans to expand in Venezuela after President Trump announced a broader oil deal with Caracas. The company received additional acreage in the Orinoco Belt, where it already operates. Chevron plans to invest more than $7B over five years. Its goal is to more than double Venezuelan output to about 600K barrels per day. CEO Mike Wirth said the expansion reflects confidence in Venezuela’s resource base. Chevron has operated in the country since 1923 and is the only major American oil company still there. Venezuela holds more than 303B barrels of proven crude reserves, the world’s largest total. Yet national production remains just above 1M barrels daily because infrastructure is degraded and sanctions remain in place. Saudi Arabia produces roughly 10M to 11M barrels per day, while America produces almost 14M. Energy Secretary Chris Wright said Washington wants private companies dealing directly with Venezuela’s government. Questions remain over acting President Delcy Rodríguez’s authority to grant 100-year rights covering 17 fields with 65B barrels of reserves. Venezuela’s constitution requires National Assembly approval for such arrangements, which has not occurred. Exxon Mobil ($XOM) says its view that Venezuela is “uninvestable” has not changed. Analysts warn restoring the industry will require years and tens of billions of dollars, with some new Orinoco projects taking two to four years to come online. Average American gasoline reached $4.12 per gallon, 93 cents higher than a year earlier.
📈 Stocks rise as oil and bond yields steady. American stocks moved higher as relatively stable oil prices and bond yields eased some pressure after two weak sessions. The Standard & Poor’s 500 (S&P 500) rose 0.6%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 270 points, or 0.5%. The Nasdaq composite also gained 0.5%. The gains followed two sessions pressured by higher oil and a global bond sell-off. Financial shares were among the stronger sectors. Dell Technologies ($DELL) jumped 6.9% after an encouraging financial update. European markets declined after Asian markets closed lower. Brent crude rose 1% to $95.69 per barrel. Oil remained elevated as renewed American-Iranian fighting intensified around the Gulf. The Strait of Hormuz normally carries about 20% of global oil shipments. Higher energy costs continue adding pressure to inflation already running above policymakers’ target. The 10-year Treasury yield edged to 4.80% from 4.79% and is up from 4.20% at the start of 2026. The two-year Treasury yield held at 4.39%, compared with about 3.50% at the year’s start. Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) FedWatch pricing showed investors assigning a 64% probability to a Federal Reserve rate increase at its September meeting.
