🇵🇷 Puerto Rico sues Luma over outages and soaring bills. Governor Jenniffer González’s government filed its first lawsuit to cancel Luma Energy’s privatization contract. The company has managed power transmission since 2021 after Hurricane Maria’s grid devastation. Critics say blackouts remain common and reliability has not improved as promised. Officials note Luma can tap nearly $11B in federal rebuilding money but has used little. Consumer advocates warn new rate cases could lift typical monthly bills by about 40%. For many residents, life is now planned around generators and spoiled groceries.

🇮🇷 Iran seizes Nobel laureate Narges Mohammadi at a memorial ceremony. Supporters say activist Narges Mohammadi was detained in Mashhad during a gathering for lawyer Khosrow Alikordi. The 53-year-old Nobel Peace Prize winner had been on medical furlough from Tehran’s Evin prison. Officials confirmed temporary arrests at the event but did not name her. Mohammadi has collected sentences exceeding 30 years for challenging compulsory hijab rules and security crackdowns. Rights groups say the move signals mounting pressure on lawyers, writers and women protest leaders. European governments and exiled Iranian activists are now urging Tehran to release her immediately.

📉 Tech slide gives Wall Street its worst day in three weeks. Artificial intelligence favorites led losses as the Standard & Poor’s 500 index (S&P 500) fell 1.1% from Thursday’s record. The Nasdaq composite dropped 1.7%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average slid 0.5%. Broadcom ($AVGO) sank about 11% even after reporting stronger profit and 74% growth in artificial intelligence (AI) chip revenue. Analysts say its lofty valuation left little room for cautious guidance. Other big AI winners this year also slipped, erasing part of their earlier gains. Strategists warn indexes near records can now wobble on even small disappointments.

🛍️ Holiday shoppers feel squeezed as prices stay stubbornly high. A national survey finds that about two-thirds of Americans say holiday gifts are harder to afford. Most say groceries, electricity, and everyday essentials cost more than usual. Roughly half report delaying big purchases or trimming nonessential spending to cope. About 68% now call the economy poor, little changed since 2022. Inflation has eased from its peak but still runs near 3%, above the Federal Reserve’s 2% target. Even many Trump supporters say paychecks lag rent, food, and utility bills.

📸 Epstein photos again spotlight Trump, Clinton, and Andrew. House Oversight Committee Democrats released images from Jeffrey Epstein’s estate that show Donald Trump, Bill Clinton and Prince Andrew. The batch comes from more than 95K photographs turned over by the estate. Representative Robert Garcia said staff blurred women’s faces to protect possible victims. The release coincides with a court order requiring the Justice Department to unseal records from Epstein-related cases. Trump dismissed the photos as social snapshots and “no big deal.” Advocates say the material highlights how comfortably powerful figures once moved through Epstein’s orbit.

✈️ TSA moves to end union deal for airport screeners. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) plans to cancel the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) contract in January. The seven-year deal, set to run through 2031, covers about 47K officers. Acting deputy administrator Adam Stahl says screeners should spend less time on grievances and more on security. The American Federation of Government Employees union calls the decision an unprovoked attack on worker rights. Union leaders warn that weaker protections could worsen turnover at already short-staffed checkpoints. Advocates fear staff will hesitate to report harassment or discrimination.
