🌎 GLOBAL NEWS
🇵🇰 Pakistan’s monsoon death toll passes 100. Monsoon rains and flash floods have killed 109 people nationwide since June 26th. Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority reported the updated toll. Nearly half of the deaths occurred in northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province along the Afghan border. Many victims died when houses and roofs collapsed. Heavy rain also inundated neighborhoods around Lahore, Pakistan’s cultural capital. Residents waded through water while commuters made lengthy detours. Images of the flooding prompted criticism of government preparedness. Disaster officials reviewed response plans before the latest forecast. Authorities are preparing warnings for communities living beside rivers. Residents could be urged to leave voluntarily or evacuated before floodwaters arrive. Forecasters expect another round of heavy rain across the country. Officials have not ruled out conditions resembling the catastrophic floods of 2022. That disaster submerged roughly one-third of Pakistan. It killed 1,737 people and displaced millions. Climate-vulnerable communities remain exposed to weak housing, crowded floodplains, and limited warning time. The rising toll shows how quickly a seasonal monsoon becomes a national emergency.
🇯🇵 Kyushu quake collapses buildings and leaves dozens missing. A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Japan’s southern main island. Part of a shopping center collapsed in Kashima Town. Four people were rescued with injuries, while 10 remained unaccounted for. A chimney also collapsed at a paper factory in Yatsushiro. Eleven people were trapped beneath debris there. Two were found without vital signs, and nine others remained in unknown condition. More than 260K people were advised to evacuate in Kumamoto and neighboring Nagasaki. A tsunami advisory was lifted within two hours. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi reported damaged roads, bridges, buildings, blackouts, and fires. Regulators found no abnormalities at three nearby nuclear plants. Hospitals in Yatsushiro and Kumamoto received roughly 90 injured people. Toyota Motor ($TM) suspended work at three Kyushu factories. Honda Motor ($HMC) also halted operations. Bullet trains, local rail service, airport traffic, and regional deliveries were disrupted. A train derailed at Yatsushiro station, while Kumamoto Castle suffered fresh damage. Authorities warned residents to remain alert for strong aftershocks over the next several days.
🇺🇸 LOCAL NEWS
🌹 Republicans seize on a sweeping socialist platform. The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) published its Workers Deserve More agenda this month. It proposes drafting a new constitution and restructuring the federal government. The plan would abolish the Senate. It would replace the president and Supreme Court with leaders selected by Congress. It also calls for voting rights for all permanent residents of the United States. Other proposals include public election financing and a multiparty democracy. The platform supports public ownership of large corporations. It seeks to end Immigration and Customs Enforcement detentions and deportations. Long-term goals include abolishing borders and prisons. House Speaker Mike Johnson portrayed the agenda as evidence that communism had entered Democratic politics. President Trump has similarly revived attacks describing Democrats as communists. The Republican National Committee amplified the platform as midterm campaign material. DSA-backed candidates have recently defeated moderates in several Democratic primaries. Yet those candidates do not necessarily endorse every plank. Progressive Abdul El-Sayed, for example, says he supports regulated capitalism rather than socialism. The platform gives Republicans a national target while deepening Democrats’ internal argument over how far left their coalition should move.
🕯️ Washington honors Lindsey Graham as an American original. Senator Lindsey Graham lay in state beneath the Capitol Rotunda. The South Carolina Republican died on July 11th at age 71. Preliminary findings pointed to a likely aortic tear. Graham spent more than 30 years in Congress. Senate Majority Leader John Thune remembered his humor and ability to push colleagues into action. Vice President JD Vance called him a swashbuckling public servant. President Trump and foreign leaders attended services at Washington National Cathedral. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy joined the mourners. Their presence reflected Graham’s long focus on national security and American military power. Graham entered Congress during the Republican wave of 1994. He helped manage President Bill Clinton’s impeachment before winning a Senate seat in 2002. Graham later joined Senators John McCain and Joe Lieberman in the foreign-policy alliance known as the three amigos. He became a bipartisan negotiator and an influential advocate for Ukraine. Days before his death, Graham secured Trump’s support for stronger sanctions against Russia. His sister, Senator Darline Graham, was appointed to complete his term. Joint Base Charleston will be renamed to preserve a legacy built on combativeness and relentless political motion.

🧠 Corporate tokenmaxxing collides with the AI bill. Companies are retreating from the practice of maximizing AI-token consumption. The springtime fad treated heavy usage as evidence of productive, technically ambitious employees. Tokens are the small units of text that models read and generate. More tokens usually mean larger bills and access to more capable systems. Moody’s ($MCO) AI analytics chief Vincent Gusdorf said costs rose without comparable productivity gains. Nvidia ($NVDA) CEO Jensen Huang had framed enormous token spending as a sign of effective engineering. Meta Platforms ($META) even ran an internal competition rewarding usage. Microsoft ($MSFT) CEO Satya Nadella later warned that customers pay once in fees and again by surrendering proprietary data. Palantir Technologies ($PLTR) CEO Alex Karp said businesses were angry about spending that created little value. Bain consultant Jue Wang said token costs at some enterprises were doubling almost every other month. At $200 per developer, a workforce of 20K developers would cost $4M monthly. Companies are responding with model routing. Easier requests go to cheaper systems, while difficult work reaches stronger models. Open-source Chinese products such as Kimi and GLM are widening the low-cost options. Discipline treats model selection as procurement rather than prestige. Tokenmaxxing is fading because usage is not productivity when the invoice grows faster than the output.
📈 Wall Street rotates away from AI chips as oil keeps falling. The Standard & Poor’s 500 (S&P 500) rose 0.3% in afternoon trading. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 643 points, or 1.2%. The Nasdaq composite slipped 0.2% after falling 9.3% below last month’s record. Most American stocks advanced as spring profits beat expectations. Coca-Cola ($KO) climbed 5.1% after revenue increased 7%. Sherwin-Williams ($SHW) jumped 8.4%. Illinois Tool Works ($ITW) gained 5.2%. Chipmakers moved sharply in the opposite direction. Micron Technology ($MU) fell 8.9%. Advanced Micro Devices ($AMD) dropped 7%, while Applied Materials ($AMAT) lost 8.2%. Investors questioned whether AI spending can sustain the industry’s recent growth. Lower-cost Chinese models could also reduce demand for memory and computing power. South Korea’s Kospi plunged 10.8% as chip losses forced temporary trading halts. Brent crude fell 5.2% to $81.38 after briefly topping $102 last week. The 10-year Treasury yield eased to 4.59%. Wall Street’s broadening gains suggest the market can rise without AI leaders, but rotation arrives through a violent repricing.
