π΅πΈ Palestinian statehood recognized. France formally recognized the State of Palestine ahead of the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York this week, joining Australia, Canada, Portugal, and the United Kingdom this past weekend, as well as Belgium, Luxembourg, Malta, and Andorra. Over 80% (156) of the UNβs 193 member states recognize Palestine. Earlier this month, separate inquiries by the UN Office of the High Commissioner on Human Rights (OHCHR) and the International Association of Genocide Scholars (IAGS) both declared Israel is committing genocide in Gaza, following last yearβs separate UN findings. Responding to the development, Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu continued irredentist rhetoric, claiming βa Palestinian state will not be established west of the Jordan Riverβ and citing the continued expansion of West Bank settlements, which are illegal according to Article 49 of the Geneva Convention, UN Resolution 2334, and International Court of Justice.

ποΈ Trump blasts UN in GA speech. President Donald Trump rebuked the United Nations (UN) during his address to the 80th General Assembly (GA) in New York today, claiming βglobalist institutions have significantly decayed the world orderβ, though in a bizarre reversal, he later assured Secretary-General AntΓ³nio Guterres, βour country is behind the United Nations 100%β. These paradoxical comments follow Trumpβs first-day executive order to withdraw the US from the World Health Organization (WHO) and plan to stop American participation in the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) earlier this year. World leaders are gathering this week to discuss a range of global affairs issues, including crises in Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan, and other regions, as well as ongoing concerns related to inflation, trade, economic inequality, and the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) and other emerging disruptive technologies.

π Trump promotes false claims linking Tylenol and autism. President Trump linked discredited and unproven associations between the analgesic paracetamol, AKA acetaminophen, the active ingredient in popular brand-name OTC pain reliever Tylenol, and autism, in an announcement criticized by medical experts worldwide, including the European Union (EU), National Health Service (NHS), World Health Organization (WHO) and European Medicines Agency (EMA). Trump cited a limited study by Harvard and Mount Sinai researchers, which itself βdoes not show acetaminophen directly causes neurodevelopmental disordersβ, echoing mainstream clinical consensus concerning the heuristic βcorrelation does not imply causationβ, including the Food and Drug Administrationβs (FDA) own, which still maintains acetaminophen is the safest OTC during pregnancy, even more so than nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) alternatives like aspirin and ibuprofen. Claims linking autism and vaccines have been previously refuted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and National Institutes of Health (NIH). The apparent increase in autism diagnoses over the past quarter-century are attributed to diagnostic expansion and broader early screening, and a 24-year cohort study of over 2.5M Swedish children showed no association with increased risk when accounting for genetic factors.

π± Tiktok deal outlined. Details have emerged about the much-anticipated TikTok deal, brokered by the White House between parent company ByteDance and an investor consortium, including venture capital (VC) firm Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), private equity (PE) firm Silver Lake Technology Management LLC (SLTM), and Big Tech blue-chip Oracle ($ORCL), with rumored participation from billionaires Michael Dell and Rupert Murdoch. Under American control, ByteDance would license its algorithm to the joint venture partners, with algorithm and security oversight by Oracle. Proponents of the deal praise the perceived solution to Chinese surveillance and national security risks, while critics point to documented censorship from recent algorithm changes, including content deletion and comment erasure on topics relating to the Palestinian genocide, famine, and livestreamed content from journalists covering Gaza amidst concerns regarding implications of βretrainingβ for the current algorithm.

This news follows earlier announcements, including a $300B cloud deal between OpenAI and Oracle, and the $100B equity stake given by OpenAI to Microsoft.

π Kimmel returns amidst volatile free speech controversy. The late-night television host will return to the airwaves 6 days after his eponymous live show was indefinitely suspended by American Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) and its parent company The Walt Disney Company ($DIS), following widespread criticism over his comments about slain conservative activist and Turning Point USA founder Charles Kirk, including pressure from Trump administration Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chair Brendan Carr. The reversal comes after the fallout sparked national dialogue on free speech and the administrationβs continued chilling effect on freedom of expression from perceived critics and political opponents. Support for Kimmel led to extensive boycotts of ABC affiliate broadcast conglomerates Nexstar Media Group ($NXST) and Sinclair Broadcast Group ($SBGI), a mass exodus in Disney+ streaming service consumer subscription cancellations amidst price hikes and 2.75% stock dip over 5 days, and an open letter written by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) signed by over 400 artists, celebrities, and public figures.
