🇯🇵 Kyoto’s Gion Matsuri carries faith through the streets. Towering floats returned to Kyoto for one of Japan’s oldest religious festivals. Gion Matsuri began more than 1K years ago as a ritual against epidemics. The celebration continues throughout July in Japan’s former imperial capital. Its largest floats can weigh as much as 12 tons. Teams pull the structures through crowded streets beside music, dance, and song. Participants say the performances are offerings to deities rather than public entertainment alone. The festival centers on Yasaka Shrine and its Shinto traditions. Its origins reach the late 9th century, when residents sought to appease spirits blamed for disease. The shrine also reflects centuries of interaction between Shinto and Buddhism. Japan’s government formally separated the two in 1868. Neighborhoods spend months assembling and decorating their floats. A sacred tree called a shingi crowns one structure as a place for a deity to descend. Organizers also select a boy to serve as a sacred messenger. His feet do not touch the ground during the procession. Residents and tourists gather around rituals that bind religious memory to civic life. The floats turn a modern city into a moving archive of protection and devotion.

🚔 Andrew and Tristan Tate are arrested in Miami. Federal authorities detained the social media influencers on a sealed warrant. The United States Marshals Service carried out the arrests. British prosecutors are seeking their extradition on rape and sex-trafficking charges. The allegations concern conduct between 2010 and 2017. Both men are dual American and British citizens. They grew up north of London before moving to Romania in 2016. Romanian authorities arrested them in 2022 over separate allegations of sexual exploitation. The brothers have denied wrongdoing in both countries. Procedural and legal problems prevented the Romanian case from advancing to trial. They were permitted to leave Romania last year and flew to Florida. The Miami arrests place American courts at the center of the extradition dispute. The brothers are expected to appear in federal court. Their attorney Joseph McBride called the British charges false and politically motivated. He said he had not yet spoken with his clients. Andrew Tate built a global following through content promoting wealth, male dominance, and misogyny. The sealed warrant leaves key details undisclosed while the legal fight moves across a third jurisdiction.

🗳️ Pro-Israel spending reshapes Michigan’s Senate primary. The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) and affiliated groups have spent nearly $30M backing Representative Haley Stevens. It is their largest investment in a single race. The spending targets progressive candidate Abdul El-Sayed before the August 4th Democratic primary. Outside groups have poured nearly $50M into supporting Stevens overall. Her own campaign had spent close to $1M on advertising by early July. Many advertisements emphasize manufacturing and former President Barack Obama without mentioning Israel. Stevens has largely avoided discussing AIPAC directly. She describes herself as pro-Israel while criticizing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. El-Sayed has made AIPAC’s influence a central campaign issue. He calls Israel’s assault on Gaza a genocide, has called out its apartheid, and argues donor money distorts Democratic politics. Israel has killed more than 73K Palestinians since October 2023. The race carries added weight in a state with America’s largest Arab American population. Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez are campaigning for El-Sayed. AIPAC’s super political action committee declined to comment. Republican Mike Rogers is unopposed in his party’s primary. 🎬 “The Odyssey” opens with a $264.1M global haul. Christopher Nolan’s adaptation earned $124.5M domestically and $139.6M overseas. The debut surpassed the opening of his 2023 hit “Oppenheimer.” It was Nolan’s strongest launch since “The Dark Knight Rises” in 2012. Universal Pictures, a division of Comcast ($CMCSA), financed the epic. Its production budget reached roughly $250M. The studio is spending about $125M more on marketing. Nolan transformed Homer’s ancient poem into an R-rated summer blockbuster. Matt Damon plays Odysseus, while Zendaya appears as Athena. The film is Nolan’s first feature shot entirely with IMAX cameras. IMAX ($IMAX) screenings generated $51.8M worldwide. Domestic IMAX sales contributed $29.6M. Only 41 theaters could project the film in 70-millimeter IMAX. Those screens alone sold $6.3M in tickets. Some theaters added sold-out midnight and 3 a.m. showings. IMAX dedicated its screens exclusively to the movie for three weeks. The opening showed that a director’s name still functions as franchise-level intellectual property.

🥬 Taylor Farms expands its lettuce recall to 27 states. The California produce company recalled iceberg lettuce linked to a multistate Cyclospora outbreak. The products were sourced from an implicated lot in central Mexico. Distribution reached Texas, Florida, Pennsylvania, Illinois, New Jersey, and 22 other states. The recall covers 25 shredded-lettuce and salad-mix products. They were sold under eight unidentified brand codes. Some packages were shipped as recently as July 16th. Best-by dates extend through August 3rd. Sysco ($SYY), America’s largest food distributor, halted all affected Taylor Farms iceberg lettuce from Mexico. It instructed customers to destroy the products. Health officials had already tied the supplier’s lettuce to Taco Bell meals in five states. Taylor Farms said it stopped sourcing from the implicated lot. Cyclospora spreads when food contacts water contaminated with human feces. The parasite can cause prolonged diarrhea and frequent explosive bowel movements. At least 1,645 American cases and 141 hospitalizations have been reported this year. Investigators are reviewing more than 5K additional illnesses. The expanding recall turns a restaurant outbreak into a broader test of traceability across the food chain.
