πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡Ό Zimbabwe detains a top critic as term-extension plans harden. Zimbabwe detained former finance minister Tendai Biti on Monday. He is the leader of the Constitutional Defenders Forum and premier opponent of planned constitutional amendments, which would extend 83-year-old President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s rule. Mnangagwa led a coup against former dictator Mugabe in 2017. They would also shift the presidency from voters to Parliament. Another provision would postpone elections until 2030. Presidential and parliamentary terms would rise from five years to seven. He has not publicly opposed his ruling Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) party’s push. The Zimbabwean Cabinet approved the proposal in February before sending it to Parliament, where the ruling party holds a majority. In Harare, detention looked less like law enforcement than advance editing of the next election.

πŸ‡πŸ‡Ί Hungary’s opposition calls an alleged Moscow channel treason. PΓ©ter Magyar wants an investigation. He is Viktor OrbΓ‘n’s leading opponent. Magyar says Foreign Minister PΓ©ter SzijjΓ‘rtΓ³ appears to be colluding with Russia. He says that would betray Hungarian and European interests. He called the allegation treason, adding it can carry a life sentence. He also said a TISZA government would investigate immediately. TISZA now leads in polls. Parliamentary elections are weeks away. If proved, the charge would mean Budapest kept a Moscow backchannel while speaking for Europe.

πŸ—½ Runway collision turns LaGuardia into a crime scene. An Air Canada regional jet struck a Port Authority fire truck while landing at LaGuardia on Sunday night. The pilot and copilot were killed. Several other people were badly hurt. The dead crew members were based out of Canada. Air traffic was diverted to Newark Liberty International Airport. Newark briefly halted operations too after controllers reported a burning smell. LaGuardia remained closed into Monday afternoon. The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation. Governor Kathy Hochul said officials’ thoughts were with the victims and families. On a runway built for routine, two overlapping emergencies made the region’s air system brittle in hours.

πŸ›οΈ Mullin nears confirmation as the TSA standoff gets uglier. The Senate is poised to confirm Markwayne Mullin as Department of Homeland Security (DHS) secretary. His nomination advanced 54 to 37 on Sunday. Democratic Senators John Fetterman and Martin Heinrich joined most Republicans. Rand Paul opposed him in committee and missed the floor vote. Mullin would inherit a department in open dysfunction. Hundreds of thousands of Homeland Security workers have gone unpaid. That includes Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers, Secret Service agents, and Coast Guard personnel. Many TSA officers have called in sick or quit. Staffing gaps have forced checkpoint closures and erratic wait times. Mullin may win the office quickly, but the airport line is already grading his department.

πŸ“ˆ Wall Street bets on peace before peace actually arrives. Wall Street roared back Monday on hope the Iran war may ease. The Dow Jones rose more than 900 points and at one point topped 1,000. The Standard and Poor’s 500 gained 1.8%. The Nasdaq composite climbed 2.1%. The Russell 2000 jumped 3%. Brent crude fell nearly 10% to $101.26 a barrel. Norwegian Cruise Line jumped 8.8%. United Airlines climbed 5.1%, and American Airlines rose 4.6%. Iran denied talks even as President Trump said the sides were speaking. Markets rallied first on rumors of peace and left proof for later.

✈️ ICE officers arrive at airports as shutdown lines become policy. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers are now at airports to help security operations. President Trump ordered deployments during the partial shutdown. Atlanta showed the new arrangement first. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) workers have been laboring without pay since Congress failed to renew funding last month. Staffing shortages have forced some airports to close checkpoints at times. Wait times have swung dramatically for travelers. ICE officers were directed not to wear face coverings in airport duty. Senator Lisa Murkowski called the plan a bad idea. What began as a budget lapse is now blurring immigration enforcement with routine travel security. At the checkpoint, mission creep now stands in uniform beside the bins.
